The Tasks of a Forwarder

When manufacturers ship goods to another country, they are faced with lots of documents to sign, modes of transportation to arrange, and shipment issues to settle. To avoid this hassle, they usually hire a freight forwarder to do the job for them. A freight forwarder is a company or person that organises and manages shipments. Note though that the forwarder may not necessarily be a carrier of the goods and act only as a third-party service provider. Many companies find forwarders a boon because these entities are very adept at arranging cargo movement to domestic and international destinations. They are experts in preparing and processing commercial invoices, bills of lading, shipper’s export declarations, and other documents that are needed in international trade. Forwarders also organise transportation of the client’s shipment. For example, they book the truck needed to carry the loaded container to the port. Then they make sure the container is loaded on the right ship. Meanwhile, their representative in the cargo recipient’s country arranges for the train or truck that will transport the container to the recipient’s doorstep.
