The Benefits of Containerisation
If you visit a port, you would notice that all shipping containers are very similar in form. The introduction of containerisation has revolutionised the way cargo is handled. The standardisation of container sizes, shapes, and forms lowered freight charges and costs. Because uniformly shaped containers can be loaded and unloaded rapidly, a cargo ship devotes lesser time docked to the port, thus increasing trade flows between nations. Their global use forced manufacturers of swap bodies to create units that conform to those standards. Thus, virtually all the world’s containers can fit into all swap bodies that are towed by semi-trailer trucks.
Containerisation also improved cargo security. First, the box effectively hides whatever cargo from the casual viewer. Next, the container’s doors are sealed upon closing which makes attempted tampering more obvious. The doors also prevent the cargo from falling out the back of the box. Finally, uniformly sized shipping containers reduce railway cargo problems that are caused by incompatible rail gauges in different countries, making trans-shipment between different gauge trains faster and easier.
