Packing Paintings the Right Way

While the concern with furniture and appliances when moving is more on dents and scratches, the concern with regard to artworks is more on the issue of value. A damaged painting will not be worth the same as an undamaged piece. It is therefore important to keep a valuable item in a secure storage box or container during transport. Framed Portrait

If the artwork is framed, carefully removed it from the wall and lay it down on a cloth that is spread on the floor or the table. Using a soft cotton fabric, wipe away the item of dirt and dust, and make sure that it is thoroughly cleaned. Put a masking tape across the glass of the frame then, forming an X, so as to keep the pieces in place together in case the glass sheet cracks or breaks. After which, cover the item with a bubble wrap and tape it tightly enough to keep it secure. Place it then in a box for final packaging. Use lightly wadded newspapers as padding if the artwork fit loosely inside the case.

Unframed Artwork

If you are moving one without a frame, secure the item between layers of cardboard. Put paper triangles on each four corner of the material to keep the artwork in place. Tape it then securely when you’re done and place it inside a corrugated cardboard. Use newsprint papers to keep the package intact during transport.
