Customs Brokers
Customs brokers are professionals responsible for clearing goods through customs barriers for importers and exporters. They make sure that the goods are free from the risk of costly delays and/or seizure. Brokers are normally stationed at inland ports. They prepare documents and handle electronic submissions, calculate taxes, and facilitate communication between businesses and government authorities. They need to familiarise the tariff schedule, list of duty rates for imported items, and the regulations governing importation.

Also, brokers use their connections with trucking companies to arrange the trans-shipment or local delivery of cleared merchandise. Some are even employed or affiliated with freight forwarders. Brokers need to obtain license. In most countries, brokers are licensed by the local customs authority, which is called Customs and Border Protection in the United States, Border Service Agency in Canada, and Customs Service in Australia. Brokers, however, are not government employees and are different from customs agents.
