Container System
The invention of the container system revolutionised international trade and commerce. This technology has been proven to be very useful and valuable in hauling of goods inside sturdy, standardised containers and in transporting by land or sea. This integrated mechanised system wherein standardised containers could travel on all modes of transportation – rail, truck, or ship – has transformed the global trade.

A 40-foot long container
Standardising of container sizes was required to make it interchangeably work on all transportation modes. The 20- and 40-foot long containers became the industry standard. However, some cargo companies find 24-foot containers most suitable, particularly in West Coast and Hawaii. Handlers found that loading and unloading of cargo from pier to ship accounted for nearly half of transportation costs. Standardising and streamlining of transportation resulted in cost savings. It also reduced cargo handling to minimum.
